Fingerprints are a widely accepted form of Identification due to the fact “no two fingerprints are alike”, thus a fingerprint is a unique form of identification. Fingerprinting can be dated back 1,500 years, where the Chinese used them for a form of identification. Fingerprints are used in numerous applications and industries. Predominate use is in Government and Law Enforcement, yet we see many applications for fingerprints in Banking, Real Estate, Check Cashing, and recently within Corporate America.

Fingerprints are still produced by inking a finger with black ink then in a rolling motion pressing the finger onto a piece for paper. This process needs inks which are certified to an FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) standard which requires the ink, on paper, remains visible and readable for up to 75 years. Some manufactures such as Dactek introduced an inkless formula which provided for a chemical reaction between the clear ink and a chemically treated paper. The reaction of the clear ink chemicals with the coated paper produced a fingerprint image which would last for 75 years also.
Companies such as Identix are pioneering electronic fingerprinting and we are seeing more applications creeping into Corporate America on a daily bases. Traditionally, electronic fingerprinting has been used by law enforcement officers and government officials for fingerprinting the bad guys, background checks and alike. On many of the television programs today you hear the AFIS database. AFIS translates into Automatic Fingerprint Identification System which contains a massive database where filtering, binarization and feature extraction are compared to produce a match. This same process yet to a lesser degree is now becoming popular with time and attendance and access control systems. Employees enroll their fingerprint electronically into a scanner device such as a door lock or time clock and if there is a match the time of scan is recorded or a door is opened. Visit our product section time clocks to view the latest in biometric time clocks.
