There are many types of Identification cards (ID cards) in use today, from a very simple plastic card, to cards with enhanced security, Radio Frequency (RF) circuitry and even smart cards. The applications vary from industry or specific needs but the fact remains, the photo ID card will continue in existence for years and possibly decades to follow.
The most common form of identification card is the driver’s license and this is a good place to start when we consider the elements of an ID Card. The driver’s license can be broken down into categories; the card itself which is usually made of plastic or some composite material, it has graphical qualities with images (signatures), contains personal data in the form of text with some type of encoding, it contains your photo, conditional use (corrective lenses, etc.) it usually has some security features in the form of an over-laminate which also adds durability to the card in addition to the security elements.
From this example you can determine which of the categories are right for your application.
- Type of Card
- Associated graphics/logos/signatures/fingerprints
- Personal data in the form of text. name, ID number, department, etc.
- Card encoding, barcode, magnetic stripe, or other encoding such as smart cards
- Personalized Photo
- Card attributes such as corrective lenses, staff, employee, contractor, etc.
- Security features, from card issuance tracking to holograph images
- Card durability such as composite cards or clear overlay panels
The above list will become a good starting point to determine the type of ID card that will fit your specific application.
